Dog Training - Simple Commands
When you watch a dog obedience competition its easy to feel that your dog is at the very bottom of the class. These top trainers make their dogs do all sorts of complex tasks that you can only dream of. But for most of us there are only a few simple commands we need to train our dog to master.
- Getting your dog to come to you when called.
This has to be the most important one - at least in my opinion. If you can't recall your dog when he's away from you you're going to find it hard to take them anywhere and let them run free. This isn't just going to cause you the embaressment of standing in the middle of the park yelling for 30 minutes while your dog run around like a maniac, it can also be dangerous for you and others if your dog heads for the road or approaches a young child who's afraid of dogs.
- Getting your dog to sit.
This again is a fairly basic one but important. If you can get your dog to sit you can keep much tighter control of them whenever you need it. When you're waiting to cross the road getting the dog to sit stops them wandering off into the traffic. When you're talking to someone a sitting dog gives you time to chat without worrying about what they are doing. I'm sure you can think of loads more situations.
With just these 2 basic commands under your belt you'll find your time with your dog so much more rewarding. You'll be able to go more places and enjoy more activities together without having to worry about your dog running off or annoying other people.
Once you've trained your dog to master these basic commands you'll probably find you get the urge to teach him more and more. Maybe not to full competition standard but at least to be able to play dead to amuse the kids!
